Senate Democrats scored a different victory in the Byrd Bath process with regard to the Reconciliation Bill. The Senate parliamentarian judged to their advantage that a provision that would have prohibited the coverage of the abortion on the ACA market is not budget-related and must be removed from the account.
It was an abortion ban in the back door and Senaatdemocrats were gone.
Senate Democratic leader Senator Chuck Schumer said in a statement:
Senate Democrats successfully fought against the abortion ban of Republicans. We fought the newest step of Republicans in their ruthless crusade to generate women’s health care, to ensure that reproductive care would continue to be treated in the ACA market – and we won. These health care decisions must be made by people with their doctors – not politicians who are trying to extremists. This was not just a policy fight, this was about protecting the freedom, dignity and fundamental health care of women.
After the devastating Dobbs decisions and Republicans who are still planning a national abortion ban, this victory sends a clear message: no matter how hard you try, senate democrats are in the front line and will never stop fighting for reproductive freedom. Not now. Never.
The abortion ban back door was always part of the Republican plan after they won control of the federal government in the 2024 elections.
There was talk about the Republicans who change the ACA marketplace to ban abortion from December 2024. Democrats knew this was coming and they were ready.
The fact that the Republicans in the house and the Senate have spoken about the Reconciliation Act for eight months and still have difficulty passing everything, speaks volumes about their legislative and administrative incapacity forces.
Senate Democrats did a good job during the Byrd Bath to do things like Protect the CFPB And Eliminate a provision that would have enabled the Trump government to ignore judicial orders.
However, the bill is still a disaster that waits for the American people, and nobody can really breathe a sigh of relief until it is defeated.
