Eric Swalwell is 45 years old and at some point in the near future there is a good chance that he will attempt to make a political comeback. That’s the only explanation I can think of for Swalwell’s resignation statement, which contained enough ambiguity and blame from others to suggest he’s going to try to resurface after he thinks the scandal has blown over.
Here was Swalwell’s resignation statement:
Swalwell talks about taking responsibility, but he gives no indication that he thinks he did anything wrong. Sexual misconduct and assault are not wrongs. These are choices that hurt and harm women. An error is something that was not intended. What Swalwell did was make a choice.
Swalwell claims he did not commit rape or criminal sexual assault. These are facts that he allegedly committed. The criminal investigation will hopefully bring the facts to light.
Former Rep. Swalwell’s complaints about the expulsion vote show that the threat to expel him from Congress is the reason he is resigning. Swalwell had no realization or moral awakening. He knew enough Democrats would vote to expel him, so resigning was his only option.
House Democratic leaders did not defend him and immediately released a statement after the allegations came to light, calling on him to end his campaign for governor of California.
Even Swalwell’s friends called for his expulsion.
I believe that someone who has been changed or rehabilitated deserves a second chance, but Swalwell shows that it would have been a mistake if the Democrats in the House of Representatives had rejected the expulsion vote. Swalwell has not taken full responsibility and has released a statement purporting to be about apologizing to the people he hurt, including the alleged victims, who are never named, and has filed a due process complaint.
Eric Swalwell is a lawyer. He knows there is no right to due process in Congress. The fact that Swalwell raised the issue of due process suggests he is going the route of Donald Trump, claiming he was politically targeted and denied his rights.
Women are the majority of the Democratic Party and the backbone of the party.
Eric Swalwell showed that he is still only thinking of himself when he resigns from Congress, and therefore there should be no room for Swalwell in the Democratic Party now or in the future.
