Speaking to the New York Economic Club during the 2024 election campaign, Trump said, “We’re going to get down and get gas under $2 a gallon.” He also said he would “lowering the price of everything from electricity rates to groceries, airline tickets and housing costs.”
Fast forward to April 2026 and prices have increased across the board. Instead of lowering prices, Trump has raised them with a series of policy decisions. Whether it’s tax cuts for the rich, tariffs or the war in Iran, the president has raised the price of almost everything.
Besides groceries, gas prices are an immediate sore point for American consumers, so when Trump launched a choice war that sent gas prices up 40%, people reacted with anger.
Scott Bessent is Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary. Scott Bessent is also worth $600 million. Bessent, like the president and the rest of his cabinet, is completely out of touch with the lives and struggles of ordinary people.
Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked Bessent: “Secretary Bessent, it doesn’t sound like we’re going to get to $3 a gallon of gas by the summer, which we were originally told by the Secretary of Energy. He’s now saying it would be very aggressive if we get to $3 a gallon of gas by the summer. So when are we really going to get to $3 a gallon of gas?”
Remember, Trump promised less than $2 per gallon, but the goal post has now moved to $3 per gallon.
