The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia announced the recognition of the Palestinian State on Sunday, hoping that a two -state solution will bring peace with Israel despite protests from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the move was meant “to breathe new life into the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israeli’s.”
“We recognized the state of Israel more than 75 years ago as a home country for the Jewish people,” Starmer said in a video message on X. “Today we are joining more than 150 countries that also recognize a Palestinian state. A promise to the Palestinian and Israeli people that there can be a better future.”
He insisted that the recognition of the state was not a reward for Hamas, the terror group that carried out the deadly October 2023, attack on Israel that led to around 1200 people, mainly citizens, killed and the kidnapping of another 251. Hamas is the current Palestinian administrative body in the Gaza strip.

“Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization,” Starmer said, adding that Hamas “will not have a future, no role in the government, no role in safety” in a Palestinian state.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also recognized a Palestinian state and placed on X that Canada offers its “partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the state of Palestine and the state of Israel.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanian and Penny Wong, Foreign Minister and Leader of the Government in the Senate, said in a joint statement in which the recognition of the Palestinian State was announced that Hamas “cannot play a role in Palestine.”

“The recognition of Australia of Palestine Today, in addition to Canada and the United Kingdom, is part of a coordinated international effort to build a new momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of the hostages of 7 October 2023, said the statement.

More than 145 countries already recognize a Palestinian state, including more than a dozen in Europe.
