For a long time Florida A & M Band-Omroeper Joe Bullard has apologized for referring to the Plus-Sized Dance Team of Alabama State University, The Honey Beez, as “The New Face of Ozempic” during the Saturday football match.
‘I want to sincerely apologize for my comments during the Florida A & M University vs. Alabama State University Football Game last Saturday, “he wrote.” My comments aimed at the ASU Honey Beez were meant as airy chatter, but I now acknowledge that they came in a way that hurtful and unrest. “
Bullard expanded his “deepest and sincere apologies” to not only the dance team, but also to the marching hornets of Alabama State and the university as a whole. He also apologized to Famu, his supporters and “everyone who was offended” by his rhetoric.
“Friendly competition and playful jokes have long been part of HBCU [historically Black college and university] Band culture, but I started to understand that my words exceeded a border, “he continued.”My intention was never to belittle or respect the incredible young people who represent our schools with so much grace, talent and pride. They are the embodiment of our culture, and they deserve nothing less than our full respect. “
Speaking as an ‘elder’, Bullard concluded by asking the forgiveness of the public and to express hope that the HBCU community can move forward.
After Bullard’s comments, Famu President Marva Johnson issued a statement on behalf of the university about his comments and noted that she had spoken with ASU president Quinton T. Ross.
“I spoke directly with President Ross to convey my regret and to confirm that such comments are unacceptable and not tolerated,” Johnson said. “Florida A&M University takes immediate steps to guarantee the accountability within our organization and to prevent these types of incidents in the future.”

Ross also issued a self -explanation and expressed his support for the ASU dansteam.
“I personally spoke with the president of Florida A&M University and with the Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference to express my displeasure with these short -sighted comments, and they both confirmed their similarities with my feelings,” said Ross, Calling Bullard’s statements “absolutely unacceptable.”
