CNN host Anderson Cooper on “The Late Show” on Thursday took a jab at President Donald Trump and his gang’s approach to the war in Iran. But the insult that no one laughed at was perhaps the best. (Watch the video below.)
In a lively conversation with host Stephen Colbert, Cooper questioned Trump’s attempt to quickly strike a deal to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Cooper said experts have told him that such agreements take months, including the one that former President Barack Obama struck with Iran (and from which Trump withdrew).
“There are a lot of details to work out,” Cooper said. “You can’t just do it on a golf course.”
The offhand comment was no laughing matter, but taxpayers and others probably aren’t amused that the president had already logged his 56th visit to his West Palm Beach golf course and 110 days of golf in his second term by the end of March. That put his left bill for taxpayers on track at $300 million. His habit has remained undiminished during the war he has caused, endangering lives and the economy.
Cooper said one of the biggest problems with the administration’s strategy against Iran is that “it is unclear what the measures of success are.”
“People talk about the fog of war,” Cooper said, referring to the confusion soldiers can face in battle.
“Rarely does that fog come from a giant machine in the White House,” he said.
Colbert praised the Army’s work and said troops deserve to know the targets. The comedian pointed out that Trump has claimed victory several times.
“So technically this is the fog of peace,” Colbert joked with a laugh.
Cooper also ridiculed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for appearing to pass off lines from “Pulp Fiction” as scripture. Cooper dubbed him “Secretary Samuel Jackson,” referring to the actor who delivered the lines in director Quentin Tarantino’s classic film.
