Donald Trump has announced that Indonesia will pay a rate of 19 percent for exports to the US after Washington and Jakarta had agreed a trade agreement.
The American president said he had spoken with his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto, and that the deal with Jakarta will give the US “full access to Indonesia, everything”.
Trump said that Indonesia was “very strong on copper”, the metal on which he imposed a 50 percent levy last week, and was also in possession of “some very valuable” critical minerals.
“We have some of those deals that are announced,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. He said a deal with India “worked on the same line”.
The Indonesia deal is the first with more than 20 trading partners who received letters from Trump last week who told them about the rates they would pay for goods exported to the US.
The president threatened to impose a 32 percent levy on Jakarta in last week’s letter.
The US has also reached trade agreements with the VK, China and Vietnam.
“Indonesia has a number of great products, and they also have a number of very valuable earths and various other materials. One of the things that you know are known is very high -quality copper that we will use,” Trump said.
