Toulon, France-Fold Tour de France winner Chris Froome will undergo an operation on Thursday after “a serious training crash” in which the British cyclist was flown to a hospital in France.
The team of Froome, Israel Prime Minister Tech, said he was “stable and did not get a head injury”, but added that scans a pneumothorax, five broken ribs and a lumbar vertebrae fracture confirmed.
Froome was taken by helicopter to the hospital in Toulon on Wednesday after the accident, which took place while he was training near Saint-Raphaël. His team said, “There were no other cyclists or vehicles involved.”
His last victory was the Giro d’Italia in 2018. He also won the Spanish Vuelta twice, in 2011 and 2017, his four triumphs in the Tour-De first in 2013 followed by a Hattrick of titles of 2015-17.
The 40-year-old Froome never returned to his previous best level after a training crash on the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné, an event that he used to refine his bid for a record comparison of the fifth tour title. In the accident he broke his right thigh, elbow and ribs.
This last incident could spell the end of the career of Froome as his contract with Israel Prime Minister technology- He joined in 2021 – comes to an end.
