The United Nations Human Rights Council sparked outrage on Wednesday when it announced that two of the seven experts chosen for the advisory committee were from Iran and China.
Neuer added: “The committee that once drafted the UN Anti-Racism Convention is now in the grip of those who embody racism, repression and the silencing of the truth. It is an inversion of human rights – and a stain on the United Nations itself.”

In February, the Trump administration withdrew the United States from the council. President Donald Trump said at the time: “They will eventually lose their credibility, just like other organizations, and then they will be nothing.”

He added: “Ren Yisheng is a Chinese diplomat who has distinguished himself as a defender of China’s blatant human rights abuses, including against the people of State Department about China to realize that appointing a Chinese official to a human rights advisory committee is analogous to appointing a wolf over a chicken coop.”

According to Kittrie, “the report begins by stating that ‘[g]enocide and crimes against humanity occurred in China during the year against predominantly Muslim Uighurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang.”
Lawdan Bazargan, a prominent Iranian-American human rights activist who was imprisoned in Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison for political dissent, wrote on Freedom Uprising, she dismissed global support for Iranian women as “political.” motivated,’ who sides with the regime’s crackdown.”

Bazargan added: “As Iran’s ambassador to Denmark, her embassy pressured Iranian women to accept divorce terms imposed by clerics, even threatening to lose custody of the child. She has served a regime that enforces the headscarf, allows child marriage and jails women’s rights activists.”

The U.S. government, under both Democratic and Republican administrations, has classified the Islamic Republic of Iran as a leading state sponsor of terrorism and has released extensive reports on widespread human rights abuses in the country.
