A Russian gunman was killed by special forces in Ukraine on Saturday after opening fire in a Kiev supermarket, killing six people and wounding 14 others – including a 12-year-old boy.
The 58-year-old gunman lived in the Donetsk region for a long time and was born in Moscow, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
He took at least four hostages, killed one of them and fatally shot four others in the street, Zelenskyy said. Another woman died in a hospital from her injuries.
Graphic video captured by witnesses shows the gunman shooting a victim at close range in the street. Other bodies were seen lying on sidewalks and in yards.

According to Klymenko, Ukrainian special forces stormed the supermarket after 40 minutes of failed negotiations.
At least fourteen people were injured in the attack, although officials warned that number could rise if people continue to seek medical attention.
Among the injured were a 12-year-old boy and a supermarket security guard, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Zelenskyy said the gunman also set fire to an apartment before the attack, although it is unclear whether any injuries resulted from the arson.
“My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” Zelenskyy wrote in an X-post. “…We wish all the injured a speedy recovery.”
The shooter had previously been prosecuted for criminal offenses, but according to authorities, had a valid firearms permit. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are investigating.

One of the gunman’s neighbors, Hanna Kulyk, 75, described him as an “educated, sophisticated man” who lived alone and did not socialize often.
“You would never suspect he was a criminal,” Kulyk told The Associated Press.
