Indianapolis (AP)-Bubba Wallace became the first black driver to win a large race on the 2.5-mile oval of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, survived a late rain delay, two overfluences, concern about the jerking of fuel and a heavily charging Kyle Larson in the Brickyard in the Brickyard.
The third Nascar Cup victory of Wallace’s career was also his most important – his first victory over one of the four Crown Jewel races of the series.
It broke a 100-race Winless Streak that dated until 2022 in Kansas. He also won in Talladega in 2021, but this milestone victory also gave him a play -off place. No black driver has won the Indianapolis 500 and Formula 1 raced on the roadway of the track.
“Unbelievable,” Wallace shouted on his radio after crossing the garden of stones.
And although the last gap was 0.222 seconds, he did not reach the Victory Lane without any consternation.
Larson followed 5.057 seconds with 14 laps to go, but the opening was about three seconds with six over when the yellow flag came out due to rain. The cars rolled to a stop on Pit Lane with four to go, which means that Wallace has about 20 extra minutes to think and reconsider its restart strategy.
But after he had defeated Larson through the second turn, a crash behind the leaders forced a second extension, so that the race expanded even more laps as the Wallace team thought he could come without gas.
Wallace risked everything by staying on the track and defended the defensive racing winner from the restart to prevent Larson from becoming the fourth back-to-back winner of the Brickyard.
It also enlightened the frustration that Wallace felt on Saturday when he only spent most of the qualifying session on the provisional pile to see Chase Briscoe surpass with one of the last runs in the session.
He made sure there was no repeated Sunday and gave an extra boost to the 23xi Racing co-ownership of Basketball Hall by Famer Michael Jordan and last week’s racing winner, Denny Hamlin, while it continues to fight against Nascar in court about the status of the charter.
The race in the race-the challenge in the season to Ty Gibbs, who had a better car than Ty Dillon in qualifying and on racing day. Gibbs finished 21st O wins the inaugural March Madness-like single-elimination tournament and collected the price of $ 1 million.
Dillon, a surprise championship round participant after he had made the field as the 32nd and last driver, finished 28th.
Three -time series Champion Joey Logano seemed to have the lead with 26 laps to go until his right rear tire went flat. Although he was able to drive it in Pit Lane for a tire change, he lost power and struggled to get back to the circuit, causing him to be beaten out of the battle.
Ryan Blaney held up Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin to win the second phase, giving Blaney his fifth phase victory of the year. Polar winner Chase Briscoe won the first phase and ended for Bubba Wallace and William Byron. It was Brisco’s second phase victory of the season, his first since Pocono.
