Wall Street Journal Editorial Board Member Allysia Finley discusses that President Donald Trumps claims that the job report was manipulated politically before the elections to help Joe Biden on Varney & Co.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that he does not think the Bureau or Labor Statistics (BLS) should pause Monthly job report Releases due to cases of major revisions in the data in the following reports.
Bessent was interviewed “Bloomberg surveillance” And he was asked about comments from Heritage Foundation Chief Economist EJ Antoni, who has been nominated as a BLS Commissioner, that the agency must suspend the issue of the monthly report and just release twice -monthly data.
“Not at all,” Besent replied when he was asked if that is something he would support.
“What someone says when they are a private individual is very different. You know, I have called for a shadow foam chair, and now that I am sitting in this chair, I don’t think we should do that,” he added.
Trump’s choice to lead Labor Stats Agency, could pause the monthly job report on accuracy problems
“I was there when EJ was interviewed and he was incredibly qualified,” Bessent said. “I think the most important thing here is that we come back to the integrity of the figures, because it just got ok – just like so many things in our government – to become sloppy.”
“EJ is exactly, he has a doctorate in the economy. I think President Trump think a lot about this, he was very thoroughly in his questions about him. So what we want to be good data, because you can’t make good decisions without good data,” said Bessent. “It is very likely that the Fed would have done something else in June, in July if they had had this information.”
Former BLS Commissioner says there are better ways to collect data for job reports
Bessent was asked how the data collection process for the job report can be improved and said: “This idea that we accept mediocrity in the government – why don’t we bring things in the 21st century, why don’t we bring it to the digital age?”
“I don’t know about political bias somehow, but what I can tell you is that the size of the example response became smaller and then filled in the cells. And every time you get judgment versus data, things become qualitative and not quantitative,” he said.
“I think EJ will do great work to bring back quantitative standards,” said Bessent.
Antoni will have to navigate the Senate’s confirmation process to be BLS Commissioner.

The BLS was put into the spotlight after the release of the weaker than expected job report in July that only 73,000 jobs added room under the 110,000 estimate of LSEG economists while the employment in May and June was revised with 258,000 jobs.
President Donald Trump Fire BLS Commissioner Erika Mceltarferclaim that the baneng data was subject to political manipulation.
The data collection process of the BLS is designed with revisions to improve the accuracy of data over time as more of the sample is reported. For example, the monthly job report contains revisions for the previous two months to give more accurate reading about the data as more employers sent their information.
