“Every year the Census Bureau estimates what the population of the US is – they do not carry out the complete census every year, but they look at births and deaths and immigration and estimate this is what the size of the population will probably be throughout the year,” he said.
“So we weigh the survey based on that estimate, and therefore what happens ultimately, if there is a decrease in immigration, or if the number of immigrants is expected more than the Census Bureau at the start of the year, then that will automatically appear as more American employees are employed,” said Bier. “That is what makes these levels a bit funky because we trust this indirect estimate of the total population.”

“There is no evidence that the work situation has improved for the unemployment rate born in the US in the past year. If you look at the unemployment rate, that is actually what the survey is designed to estimate, the unemployment rate for employees born in the US or indigenous employees has increased,” Bier noted.
