Canada is planning to recognize a Palestinian state in September during a meeting of the United Nations, the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday.
“We work ourselves, with others, to maintain the possibility of a two -state solution, so as not to allow the facts on the ground, kill on the ground, the settlements on the ground, the expropriations on the ground, to get so that this is not possible,” Carney said.
Carney said that the move was subject to the dedication of the Palestinian authority of reforms, including commitments to reform its administration and to hold general elections next year in which Hamas cannot ‘play part’.
Israel criticized Carney’s position and called it a “reward for Hamas” that damages the efforts to reach a ceasefire -and to free the remaining hostages that are still held by the terror group after his 7 October 2023, attack on the Jewish state.

“Israel rejects the Prime Minister of Canada,” said the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement. “The change in the position of the Canadian government is currently a reward for Hamas and is damaging the efforts to achieve a ceasefiring -fires in Gaza and a framework for the release of the hostages.”
Carney’s announcement came after France said last week that it would recognize a Palestinian state and a day after Great Britain said it would recognize the state at the UN if the war in Israel-Hamas in Gaza had not yet stopped.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke with Carney before the announcement of Canada, said that the recognition of a Palestinian state “will breathe new life into a prospect of peace in the region.”
The announcements of some of the best allies of Israel reflect the growing international indignation about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which adds more pressure to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government.

“Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has allowed a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza,” said Carney.
The White House also opposes the decision to acknowledge a Palestinian state, and says that President Donald Trump agrees with Israel that it would be “Hamas wages”.
“As the president stated, he would reward Hamas if he recognizes a Palestinian state, and he doesn’t think they should be rewarded,” said a White House officer. “So he won’t do that. President Trump’s focus is on feeding people [in Gaza]. “
Trump also wrote on social media that Canada’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state “It will make it very difficult for us to conclude a trade agreement with them.”
US Special Envoy for the Midden -East Steve Witkoff is planned to travel to Israel on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gaza. Trump said this week that he expected centers to be set up to feed more people in the area.

Since 2012, the Palestinian government has been a non-member state of the UN general meeting, recognized by more than three-quarters of the 193 Member States of the meeting.
The war in Gaza started with Hamas’ 7 October 2023, attack on Israel in which around 1200 people were killed and another 251 were abducted, Israeli officials reported.
Israel responded with a constant military offensive in the Gaza Strip, in which more than 60,000 people were killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, run by the Hamas.
