The National Education Association (NEA), the largest teacher union in the country, just held its annual convention in Portland, Oregon, and laid its transformation into a brutal political organization. To give priority to the training of the American children, the NEA agenda was a parade of partisan resolutions, incorrectly spelled attacks on political opponents and a clear coordination with the extremely left -wing wing of the Democratic Party.
The tone was set by Ashlie Crosson, the Nea’s 2025 teacher of the year, who stated on July 4 that her job is “deep political” and that has always been. “Once I realized how deep political our profession had always been, I knew that I could no longer stay on the sidelines,” said Crosson. The irony of this statement on Independence Day was not lost, because the NEA was anything but independent. Instead, it revealed itself as a loyal foot soldier for progressive causes, far away from the needs of students or the concerns of parents.
The resolutions of the convention – who were leaked by a NEA participant to the NEA conference – were a master class in political over -range. One business item called on the NEA to ‘defend against Trump’s embrace of fascism by using the term facism [sic] In NEA materials to correctly characterize Donald Trump’s program and promotions. “Yes, the trade union that claims to represent educators cannot even spell fascism” in his official resolution that the president attacks. The irony is almost too rich to parody.

The Nea didn’t stop there. Another resolution labeled every movement to eliminate the US Department of Education as an “illegal, anti -democratic and racist attempt to destroy and privatize public education in the interest of the billionaires.” Mentioning the abolition of a federal bureaucracy is “racist” is absurd, especially when the track record of the Ministry of Education has been failing for decades. If there is something, the One-Size-Fits-All approach of the department has a deep-rooted inequalities, children catch at failing schools based on their postcodes.
The NEA openly supports the left -wing politics and the newest convention was simply more evidence. File: President Becky Pringle speaks on the Philadelphia delegation on July 4, 2024. (YouTube/screenshot)
Immigration policy, another subject that is far away from teaching mathematics or reading, was also central. The NEA has adopted a resolution to “defend the citizenship of the birthright and opposes the attempt to return to pre-civil Rights Movement-Jim Crow-Legal concepts of ‘Statores’ to refuse citizenship to the children of immigrants.” The trade union continued and supported students’ rights “to alternate and organize against Trump’s policy” and “against ice rays and deportations.”
The NEA resolutions were also focused on parent rights. In response to the Mahmoud v. Taylor judgment of the Supreme Court, so that parents can choose their children from the instruction of gender ideology, the NEA has assumed a business item that indicates its intention to continue to push such content in the class. This resistance of parental choice shows a trade union that is more interested in indoctrination than education. Similarly, the NEA has adopted a resolution to support “the massive democratic movement against Trump’s authoritarianism and violations of human rights”, which further confirms its role as a political activist group instead of an advocate for teachers or students.

Perhaps the most mystery was the NEA’s decision to “not use materials of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), not to endorse or to make it known”, an organization that was established to combat anti-Semitism. Why choose a group that focuses on fighting hatred? This step raises serious questions about the priorities of the trade union and sends a disturbing message at a time when anti -Semitism increases.
The political bias of the NEA is not new. Almost all its political contributions go to Democrats every election cycle, making it less a trade union and more a money laundering operation for the Democratic Party. With more than $ 380 million in annual turnover, the NEA has many resources to push its agenda. This one -sided bias is mainly strengthening in view of the unique status of the NEA as the only union in the nation with a federal charter, granted more than a century ago. This special privilege, donated by the congress, is no longer justified for an organization that is so blatant partisely. The laws must immediately withdraw this charter.
The priorities of the NEA are so wrongly aligned that in 2019 it rejected a resolution to “re -commit to the striving for more learning of students in every public school in America.” Let that sink in: a teacher union explicitly refused to prioritize to prioritize learning students. Instead, it has quadrupled his war against education, which changes classrooms in activist training grounds.

The actions of the NEA reflect the words of Horace Mann, the father of public education, who said: “We who are concerned with the Holy Causal of Education, have the right to view all parents as hostages to our case.” The NEA seems to agree and treats children as instruments for his political projects instead of individuals who deserve quality education.

The consequences of this politicization are clear. Only about a quarter of the American eighth classes are skilled in mathematics and reading scores are equally gloomy. Yet the NEA remains focused on partisan crusades instead of tackling these failures.
The trade union continued and supported students’ rights “to alternate and organize against Trump’s policy” and “against ice rays and deportations.”
This radical agenda is free advertisements for school choice and home schooling. Parents are rightly alerted by a trade union that sees their children as “hostages” for the case. Since 2019 there has been a massive exodus of public schools controlled by trade unions, more than a million families who opt for charter schools, private schools or home schooling. The Portland Convention of the NEA speeds up this trend, because parents are looking for educational options that prioritize learning over politics.

Teachers earn a trade union that fights for their professional interests, not someone who uses their contribution to finance partisely agendas. Parents deserve schools that focus on reading, writing and arithmetic, non -activism. And students deserve a course that prepares them for life, not one that makes them a base in ideological fighting.
Until the NEA returns to its core mission, members, credibility and public will continue to lose confidence. The legislators must start voting to withdraw his federal charter, and parents must continue to vote with their feet.
