Seattle Seahawks linebacker and recent Super Bowl hero Derick Hall and his mother, Stacy Gooden-Crandle, have partnered with classic American diaper brand Huggies to share Hall’s story of surviving as a baby.
Hall and Gooden-Crandle starred in the brand’s “Natural Born Fighters” ad, which showcased Hall’s miraculous journey from being a baby with a 1% chance of living. Super Bowl champion. The campaign honors Hall and other figures from history who were born in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with low survival rates after preterm birth, including Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.

For Gooden-Crandle, the collaboration is rooted in memories she still cherishes.

“Both of my kids actually wore Huggies,” she said. “And I actually had one of their very first diapers… but now you have to think, that was 25 years ago, think of all the designs they’ve created now… working with the nurses and doctors of the NICU to develop a diaper specifically for NICU babies, to me, that’s the best fight you could ever want to have for a brand that wants to make sure NICU babies have the best chances at the start of their fight.”

Hall had a 1% chance of survival when he was born four months premature at just 23 weeks gestation and weighing just two pounds. He was born without a heartbeat and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.
“Emotional, a lot of uncertainty, scared,” she said of her emotions in the days after her son’s premature birth. “But… those weren’t the feelings I felt during Derick’s birth trusted that God would work everything out.”

The journey paid off as Hall made his mark on NFL history when he came up with a tone-setting strip sack against the New England Patriots this February.

“You can’t tell me that a kid with a one percent chance of living … will one day be a Super Bowl champion without the Lord being in their life,” Hall said. “That in itself is a miracle.”
