The Secret Service doesn’t have a recruitment problem, it has a recruitment problem. How woke, DEI’s hiring practices have destroyed the world’s most enigmatic and important protective agency.
Once again the American Secret Service is in the news and once again it is an issue involving one of its employees. Embarrassing, yes, but the bigger problem is that when it comes to the Secret Service, there’s a fine line between the embarrassment and someone actually getting killed.
On March 27, it was reported that a Secret Service agent assigned to former First Lady “Dr.” Jill Biden detail claimed his gun fell out of its holster and discharged itself. The officer reportedly shot himself in the leg and was hospitalized.
Even more remarkable is how little attention this incident received – partly due to the ever-changing news cycle, partly because the media and public became less surprised by the downward spiral in which the agency was embroiled. One of the most legendary and enigmatic, if not the most important, conservation organization in the world is falling apart in front of the public and no one seems to care.

As quickly as this story disappeared, it was replaced by a story about yet another service member. On April 8, court documents surfaced showing that a Secret Service agent trainee was arrested after being caught spying on his roommate while both were undergoing Secret Service training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
This intern allegedly used a hidden camera hidden in a cell phone charger to spy on the roommate and engage in a weeks-long campaign of harassment and cyberstalking. The intern was reportedly able to covertly watch as his roommate walked around his suite, including the bathroom. The intern was arrested and charged with unlawful wiretapping and surveillance.
The Service was forced to issue a statement. Deputy Director Matt Quinn said (in part): “the allegations are deeply troubling and raise significant concerns about the individual’s character and fitness to serve.” More troubling is that this individual had been a civilian employee of the agency, whose job was to monitor and assess threats against the president.

These two recent incidents beg the question, “What the hell is going on with the Secret Service and the people it hires?”
The hiring process for an agent is lengthy: there are multiple interviews, an intrusive polygraph examination, a physical examination, and the most extensive background investigation a person can undergo by the federal government before receiving a job offer and the Top Secret clearance that comes with the position; waiting a year is not unusual.
Somehow, despite this process, there have been far too many people who have managed to secure a spot and eventually reach the position of Special Agent; people who have been hired in some way and yet have nothing to do with that position.
SECRET SERVICE AGENT ASSIGNED TO VANCE, PLACED ON LEAVE AFTER ALLEGED SECURITY LEAK
I argue that this is the model that the Secret Service leadership chose, under intense pressure during the Biden administration, and that has crushed this once vaunted agency. Wokeness, optics, minority appeasement, and DEI hiring practices replaced common sense, invalidated the agency’s goals, and violated every rule of successful business practices.
The service now finds itself in a dilemma that will take at least a generation to resolve. The unqualified applicants who should never have been hired in the first place are rising to leadership positions they are equally unqualified for, taking these critical positions out of necessity due to astronomical turnover, continued DEI practices (which continue under this Trump appointed director), and ineffective leadership unwilling to deal with and put an end to this nonsense. So the loop is now running in a very public way, with the world watching.

Don’t fool yourself either, it’s not just the typical international terror groups we can all name, it’s much worse. It’s the next Thomas Crooks or Ryan Routh, even the (as yet) unnamed activist group egged on by woke liberal elected officials, combined with a staunchly anti-Trump judiciary and ultra-biased media. It is the people who learned of the high-profile failures and very public display of incompetence, incompetence, lack of focus and an outright inability to do the Secret Service’s job who could now seize the opportunity to harm the president.

Is the president safe? Certainly not as safe as it can or should be. A large part of the Secret Service’s ability to provide complete protection to every protected individual is perception – the perception that this agency and its associates will do whatever it takes to ensure not only the safety of the President but also the continuity of the United States government, going to whatever lengths necessary to successfully complete the mission, paying ridiculous attention to detail, and building on crucial fundamental aspects of advancing the goal of ensuring a safe environment not only for the protected individuals but also for the public.
It is not overly dramatic to say that when the Secret Service fails, the resulting cascade affects the entire world.

But this level of focus, motivation and dedication doesn’t just require the best people – it also requires the right people. The failures of this agency, the public comments of some employees, and the display of woke incompetence and contempt have destroyed the public’s confidence in the abilities of this once untouchable agency to get the job done.
Somehow, despite this process, there have been far too many people who have managed to secure a spot and eventually reach the position of Special Agent; people who have been hired in some way and yet have nothing to do with that position.
For an agency whose mission truly does not allow for any failure, they have completely lost focus and are showing no signs of recovery. If this had been a private company, the Secret Service would have closed its doors long ago. The agency doesn’t have a hiring problem, it has a recruitment problem.

Do you want to fix the Secret Service? Clean house of all senior leadership – stop this cycle of woke DEI hiring and promotions. Find the right people, people who understand the magnitude of the task, who are willing and able to actually do it. Truly restore the search for the “best qualified candidates,” maintain physical and training standards, and return the agency to the foundations that made it great.
This can’t be someone’s first job, nor can the Service continue to hire every older applicant or appease every interest group that checks a box for the sake of optics.
