Team USA women’s hockey stars Hilary Knight and Megan Keller made a surprise cameo on “SNL” this weekend to clown Donald Trump over his humiliating joke about inviting their team to the nation’s capital. (Watch the moment below.)
During the “Saturday Night Live” monologue, host and “Heated Rivalry” star Connor Storrie shared his doubts about stepping down from his role on the hit HBO Max show after watching athletes on the ice during this year’s Winter Olympics.
That’s when American men’s hockey stars and brothers Quinn and Jack Hughes — the latter of whom scored the golden overtime goal in the Olympic final over Canada — crashed Studio 8H. The two noted that they didn’t get around to the actor’s queer hockey romance during their undefeated run in Milan.
“Oh, I hope some hockey players watched it,” Storrie said just before Knight and Keller, the latter of whom secured gold with an overtime goal of her own over Canada in her team’s final, walked onto the stage.
The two lady stars’ cameo caused the “SNL” audience to erupt in applause for nearly 30 seconds.
“Oh wow, Hilary and Megan, it’s so cool that we’re all here,” Storrie said.
“It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys too,” joked Knight, who described Trump’s joke during his congratulatory phone call to the winning men’s team earlier this week as “distasteful and unfortunate.”
“Yeah, we thought we could give them a moment to shine,” Keller added, giving Quinn Hughes a playful nudge.
The men’s team, which was criticized for laughing in response to Trump’s joke, accepted the president’s invitation to attend his State of the Union address and visit the White House.
The women’s team declined the president’s begrudging invitation to also attend the SOTU speech, citing scheduling conflicts. Trump has said the women’s team will be honored with a visit to the White House “soon.”
In the days since, some members of the men’s team have expressed regret about the laughter in the locker room.
On “SNL,” Storrie noted that “Heated Rivalry” appeals to those not always represented in the sport and applauded the hockey stars from both teams for their surprise appearance on the NBC comedy sketch show.
