Zohran Mamdani’s latest bid to become mayor of New York City is a cynical, divisive, and frankly downright false accusation that Gotham is a hotbed of vile Islamophobia. In a word: it’s nonsense.
So far, Mamdani has told two personal stories of alleged anti-Muslim hatred in New York, the most famous story involving his aunt, who turned out not to be his aunt, who felt uncomfortable on the subway after nearly 3,000 people were killed in the massive hate crime of September 11.
Mamdani stood on the sidewalk in tears as he told supporters the terrible story. But there’s just one problem: even if this story is true (which is far from certain), it’s not Islamophobia, it was just his non-aunt having a normal reaction.
Mamdani does not claim that anyone expressed any animosity towards this woman, who he now claims was a distant relative who is no longer alive. She was not ridiculed, harassed or abused in any way. She was just afraid that this would be the case. It makes sense that a member of any group would feel uneasy after a mass murder committed in the name of that group.

Mamdani’s second and final example of Islamophobia, perhaps unsurprisingly, also concerns 9/11. He claims that as a student at an upscale Manhattan high school after the Twin Towers were attacked, his teacher pulled him out of class and warned him that he might face bullying.
Let’s be clear: in 2001, the best prep schools were absolute bastions of far-left political and educational theories, so why this teacher thought non-Muslim students would take action against the young Mamdani makes little sense.
But again: this example of Islamophobia lacks any form of actual Islamophobia. Mamdani never says he was bullied, only that his progressive high school teacher worried he might be.

And that’s it. That’s the full list of allegedly Islamophobic incidents that brought Mamdani to tears almost a quarter of a century later. Then why on earth is he walking around saying, “Being a Muslim in New York means expecting outrage?”
Mamdani wants to convince New Yorkers that today’s city is something out of Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing,” and that even if people aren’t swearing at each other to death into the camera, at least they think so.
It is a ridiculous and dangerous claim. I lived in Bay Ridge, the Gotham nabe with the highest percentage of Muslims in the city, and I can vouch that Mamdani’s demand for Islamophobia far exceeds New York City’s infinitesimal supply.

This fever dream that Mamdani has, that he is surrounded by horrible bigotry, not only shows a certain contempt for a large part of the city, but also betrays a great ignorance of it.

Are there a handful of places where old-timers spit into the broken glass and wax poetic about the good old days before Muslim immigration? Perhaps, but this pose is so insignificant as to be almost invisible.
Mamdani’s false accusation that the Big Apple is a hotbed of Islamophobia should concern all New Yorkers. Finally, what measures could he take to combat this imaginary problem?

Will Mamdani Public Schools force this schlock on Gotham’s children and insist that they live in a racist city? Worse still, will anti-terrorism efforts be halted to avoid creating the appearance of Islamophobia?
In 2016, the late, great comedian Norm Macdonald quipped, “What terrifies me is if ISIS detonated a nuclear weapon and killed 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims!”

For Zohran Mamdani, this is not a joke, it is actually how he thinks about the world. That’s a very bad thing for someone who wants to lead the city that is perhaps the main target of Islamist terrorism in the world.
In all likelihood, Zohran Mamdani will become mayor of New York very soon. He owes it to the city’s residents to give up the pretense that they are engulfed by Muslim hatred. It may be a politically convenient lie for pundits and sociologists, but it’s no way to lead the nation’s largest, most diverse city.

Give it up, Zohran. No one in New York City hates you or anyone for being Muslim, despite your stories about September 11th. In fact, the complete lack of bigotry against Muslims after the attack is a testament to Gotham’s solid values.
Only a Democrat-Socialist could stand on the brink of being elected Mayor of New York at the age of 34 and conclude that this is a sign of mass Islamophobia, when in fact it is clear evidence that the exact opposite is true.
