Trump won 55% of the Hispanic vote in Texas, and when Republicans tried to save their majority in the U.S. House through gerrymandering, they were counting on Texas and the Hispanics who voted for Trump in 2024.
When Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the new map into law, he said, “Four of the five districts we will create are predominantly Hispanic districts. Democrats think they have ownership over voters who are Hispanic or Black. They are now learning the hard way how those voters support Republicans.”
The Latin American shift toward the Republican Party has been a topic of conversation among national Republicans throughout 2025. The shift of black voters and young voters to Republicans has proven to be a 2024 mirage, as those groups have sent Trump back to his usual low approval ratings, but the Republican party has told anyone who will listen that Hispanics have moved in their direction, and they think it will stick.
The idea is absurd at first glance. Since taking office, Trump has used ICE to terrorize Hispanics in the United States. Trump assured Hispanics that he would only deport criminals, but it seems Trump’s definition of a criminal is pretty much anyone with brown skin.
The result has created a problem for Trump and the most important part of the Republican gerrymander strategy.
