Whether it’s the Young Republicans acting like the Hitler Youth in a group chat or Donald Trump discouraging efforts to catch and prosecute sex traffickers, the former party of “family values” has shown its true colors lately.
The same party that is trying to take away women’s access to health care while cutting child support and nutrition programs has also molded itself in the image of Donald J. Trump, a president who a judge in the E. Jean Carroll case says is a convicted rapist.
Did you know that the Trump administration tried to impose conditions on state grants to combat domestic violence? Less than a week ago, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration cannot condition grants to combat domestic violence on eliminating DEI.
It could be argued that by weakening efforts to combat domestic violence, whether by design or unintended consequences, the Republican Party has become the pro-domestic violence party.
While holding a press conference with House Republican leaders on Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson stopped short of his efforts to blame Democrats for the government shutdown he caused and his refusal to reopen the House to deliver a breathless statement.
The latest hearing in Florida resulted in a federal judge issuing a restraining order against a sitting member of Congress because he believed Mills had harmed the woman and put her at risk of becoming a victim of dating violence. Rep. Mills had threatened to distribute sexually explicit videos of his ex-girlfriend.
None of this sounds like this should be the behavior of a sitting member of Congress, unless Mike Johnson is the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
