Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was confronted with criticism because he does not run the attack of a Jewish man with his children in a suburb of Montreal on Friday.
The man walked with his three children in a park when an unknown individual approached and squirted with water. The attacker then physically attacked the father, hit him on the floor and threw his Kippah away, a traditional skull cap worn by remarkable Jewish men.
On Monday, the police in Montreal announced the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect in connection with the attack, an incident that fueled the growing calls for the Canadian government to combat unbridled anti-Semitism.

“Canada is not yet at the stage of Belgium or the UK – both have become extremely dangerous for Jews – but it goes there, slowly and inexorably,” he added.
Carney commented on the incident at 11 p.m. on Saturday – about a day and a half later – after the Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar publicly criticized Ottawa’s response.

“The attack on a Jewish father in Montreal leaves yesterday, for his own children, is a terrible act of violence. Everyone in Canada has an inalienable right to live in safety,” Carney posted on X.
Sa’ar had declared him on XWriting: “The incident in this video is shocking and abdominal walk. … These are images that are reminiscent of dark periods of Jewish persecution. This is terrible.
“The Canadian government must do more to combat anti -Semitism!” he added.
Although Jews are good for less than 1% of the Canadian population, anti -Semitism was behind 18.8% of all reported hate crimes in 2024. Of the 1,342 incidents classified as religiously motivated, 920 or 68.5%, were aimed at the Jewish community.
Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy at B’nai Brith Canada, noted that only a synagogue in Victoria, British Columbia, was illegible with anti -Semitic threats, which underlines that Jews has become a national problem.

“What happened in Montreal on Friday afternoon was absolutely terrible. It should serve as a wake-up call for the entire city. This is what happens when social leaders allow a atmosphere where hateful villains have the feeling that they can act impunity,” he said.
The attack took place in the midst of a broader climate of intense anti -Semitism, which recently led Deborah Lyons, Canada’s special envoy about Holocaust -Herinnering and combating anti -Semitism, to resign in July – three months before her term ended – quoting physical and emotional exhaustion.
It also took place against a background of tense relationships between Canada-Israel. Canada is one of the four countries, next to France, Australia and the United Kingdom, who have announced their intention to recognize a Palestinian state.
“In my opinion, Trudeau’s approach to the conflict was very plural and not -advanced. He had a very fast -growing Muslim population in Canada, and he was careful to do nothing to alienate those voters,” said Bercovici.

According to Statistics Canada, the population that identified as Muslim has doubled more than 20 years, with an increase of 2.0% (579,640 people) in 2001 to 4.9% (1,775,715 people) in 2021.
“What we have seen, as in many other parts of the West, is that they have come and have demanded that we change to accommodate them – that we change the way we change things. Some of their most consistent demands are related to Israel and Jewish communities, which have become more and more goals,” said Bercovici.
