Uber announced a “women’s preferences” on Wednesday with which female drivers and drivers in the US are only connected to other women for their journeys through the service for sharing journeys.
The pilot program will start in the coming weeks in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Detroit. The company does not yet have a launch date for other American cities.
“About the US, female riders and drivers have told us that they want the option to be linked to other women on traveling,” the company said in a press release. “We have heard them – and now we are introducing new ways to give them even more control over how they drive and drive.”

“For the first time in the US we are launching female preferences – features designed to give female drivers and drivers more choice, more trust and more flexibility when they use Uber,” the company added.
The new position is because Uber has taken up thousands of incidents of sexual attacks over the years and has tried to introduce measures to make travel safer.
The company previously launched the Women Rider Preference function in other countries, allowing women in around 40 countries to apply for female drivers. The program was first launched in Saudi Aarabia in 2019 after a law adopted that gave women the right to drive, and it then expanded after receiving an “overwhelming positive” reaction.

“Of course, riders wanted the same choice,” said Uber. “But this work reliable not only symbolic-early a well-thought-out design. Most drivers are men, so we worked to ensure that this function was really usable in various places around the world. We have tested, listened to markets such as Germany and France, to fit the function to Real-World Rider and Driver-Thrower.”
Female drivers must verify their own gender in the app to gain access to the new function. When selecting a ride they see “female drivers” as an on-demand option, along with existing options such as UberXL, Uber Black, Comfort and Wait & Save. Riders can also reserve travel with female drivers in advance.

In addition, female drivers have the option to request travel with female riders.
Although it is not guaranteed, the company said that riders and administrators can engage the preferences of the woman in their app settings to increase the opportunities to be coordinated with another woman.
Lyft, another Rit-Share service, introduced the option “Women+ Connect”-comparable with the new Uber-in September 2023 program before it was expanded nationally in February 2024.
