History spivots at times measured in millimeters and July 13, 2024, was no exception. On that summer afternoon in Pennsylvania, the bullet of a murderer President Donald Trump met, Tragicular Corey Comperatore killed and David Dutch and James Copenhaver injured. What a catastrophic break in the route of our country could have been, instead, it became the moment that a nation inspired and collected an electorate. Bloodied but unbent, President Trump’s survival showed the resilience that would define his path back to the White House and change the course of American history.
But this was not a random act of violence. It was an attack on the basis of our Republic – the starting point that Americans can disagree without destroying each other. That the polls, not a bullet, determines our leaders.
While we commemorate the first birthday of this determining moment, we do this with clear eyes determination and steel determination. We honor the courage of law enforcement officials, First Responders and Medical Staff, whose quick actions have saved countless lives on that day. We also condemn unambiguously political violence.
Trump unveils crucial, group of a second moment that saved his life during the attempt of the murder of the Butler
But recognition without action is hollow. That is why we introduced a resolution to solemnly mark the one -year anniversary of the attempted murder of President Trump. This resolution not only condemns the multiple attempts against the life of the president, but even though those who encourage violence against political officials. This resolution also honors the victims of the shooting.
Political violence and division rhetoric aimed at chosen officials, regardless of party relationships, contradictory with American values, undermine the democratic process and threaten the lives of civil servants. Recent violent attacks on Pennsylvania – Governor Josh Shapiro, speaker Minnesota State House Emerita Melissa Hortman and Senator of the state of Minnesota, John Hoffman, are rejecting and underlines that this is not a partisan problem – it is a national crisis.
In 2024 alone, the US Capitol Police Threat Assessment Section 9,474 examined threats and relevant statements aimed at members of the congress, their families and staff. These are amazing statistics. In response, the Capitol police recently launched a new protective intelligence center to better receive, process and tackle this alarming volume of threats against members of the congress. Although this is a start in the right direction, we can and must do more to protect our members, families, employees and all visitors to Capitol Hill.
The chairman of the home administration committee Bryan Steil’s two -part efforts to strengthen Capitol Hill’s security are a good start to solve this safety problem. This effort is about more than protecting our chosen officials – it is about the preservation of the institution itself.
