Republican administrations hate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and are always on the side of corporate America when it comes to destroying protections for the American people.
The second Trump administration has taken this behavior to a new level, agencies appear no longer pretend to regulate the industries they are expected to oversee; instead, they are now working hand in hand with major corporations to harm the American people.
Trump administration officials also have no reservations about lying to Congress, as Republicans control both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin was testifying before Congress and he was unprepared for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) who asked, “Secretary Kennedy was here a few weeks ago and when he was asked about glyphosate and the rollbacks on toxic chemical protections, he said we should quote, ask Lee Zelin about that. So you are here before us today. Administrators, Zelin. Have you ever participated in a meeting with Bayer where you discussed the legal or litigation issues facing the company was confronted?
Zeldin’s response was his first mistake: “No, I never did that. My meeting with them was very brief and that subject did not come up.”
AOC asked: “Are you aware of any contact they may have within your agency regarding this?”
Zeldin said, “I had a quick meeting right away. OK. But it was a quick meet and greet and that topic didn’t come up.”
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez then entered visitor logs into the record and gave Zeldin another chance: “Are you sure they didn’t bring up anything about your work?”
Zeldin stuck to his story: “I’m telling you one hundred percent. Absolutely. Perhaps there was some brainstorming in advance about possible topics. Are you aware of that, that topic was not discussed.”
The New York congressman then dropped the gavel.
