It’s easy for people in the United States who have been battling Donald Trump for a decade to forget that the rest of the world is not subject to the version of Trump they get in his second administration.
During Donald Trump’s first administration, especially in foreign policy, he was to some extent contained by people who knew what they were doing and told him no.
These people do not exist in the second Trump administration.
Trump is now surrounded by people who parrot his ideas, no matter how crazy they are, and carry out his wishes as he wishes.
The world gets to see it that the American people have been dealing with for years, and it’s clear they don’t know how to deal with it.
Very early Tuesday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social:
Shockingly, our “brilliant” NATO ally, Britain, is currently planning to give away the island of Diego Garcia, site of a vital US military base, to Mauritius, for NO REASON whatsoever. There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of utter weakness. These are international powers that recognize only STRENGTH, and that is why, under my leadership, now, after just one year, the United States of America is respected as never before.
Britain’s giving away of extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is yet another act in a long line of national security reasons why Greenland should be acquired. Denmark and its European allies must do the right thing. Thank you for your attention to this matter. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP
In Davos, Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been in conflict with Trump for years, had advice for European leaders.
Newsom said:
It’s time to renovate. It’s time to get serious and stop being complicit. It’s time, to stand tall and strong, to have a backbone. I have seen this in the United States, where the Congress behind it played both sides.
Say one thing in a text or a tweet and something else in public: it is a reform with principles. It’s time to stand tall.
