The Trump administration has turned the Kennedy Center, which serves as a living monument to former President John F. Kennedy, into a ghost town by slapping Donald Trump’s name on the Kennedy Center.
Cancellations have continued to increase after the current administration turned a nonpartisan memorial into an ego trip for the current president.
A veteran New York jazz ensemble and dance company have canceled events at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, deepening the fallout for one of the nation’s leading arts centers after it was renamed for President Trump.
The center had previously promoted two New Year’s Eve performances by the Cookers as an “all-star jazz septet that will ignite the Terrace Theater stage with fire.” But those performances, such as an annual Christmas Eve jazz concert hosted by Chuck Redd, are now canceled.
…
Doug Varone and Dancers, a New York-based dance company, also said Monday that it canceled two performances in April that were meant to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Mr. Varone, the company’s head, said it would lose $40,000 if it pulled out.
“It is financially devastating but morally exciting,” he said in an email.
These artists who cancel their shows lose money. Depending on the schedule, it is possible that they can fill in the lost data, but in many cases this is unlikely.
The Trump administration has responded to the cancellations with the wrong approach, which will likely backfire on them and leave the venue empty, as we’ll discuss below.
