The American people should not have to live with it ICE and border agents are entering their cities who are nowhere near the border terrorizing immigrants and citizens with apparently poorly trained agents pressured to meet a quota for deportations imposed on them from the White House.
Sens. Chris Murphy and Adam Schiff have introduced legislation that would end Trump’s faux-crime crusade in the nation’s cities.
The legislation would do four things, according to information from Murphy and Schiff:
-
Clarify that the Border Patrol zone does not exceed 25 land miles (consistent with existing statute);
-
Recognize the Border Patrol’s critical work in emergencies such as the Uvalde school shooting by providing exceptions for the Border Patrol zone where lives are in immediate or imminent danger;
-
Prohibit delegations of authority to the Border Patrol to ensure agents can remain focused on their primary mission: ensuring a secure border; And
-
Provide transparency in the form of public reporting on data on various training and interactions with US citizens and others.
There is currently a total lack of transparency in the process. When an incident involving border agents and U.S. citizens occurs, the Trump administration is caught lying and making up pretexts for illegal actions after the fact.
