It was always going to end like this.
Speaker Mike Johnson shut down the House of Representatives for nearly two months to prevent any possible deal on restoring Obamacare subsidies. This same person is determined to increase the cost of health insurance for the American people, so Johnson would obviously not keep his promise to allow a vote in the House of Representatives on restoring the subsidies.
The original The Republican plan was to propose their own health care law and offering a vote on extending the ACA subsidies so that moderate Republicans in the House of Representatives would have a chance to vote to extend them, which in theory would help them campaign for re-election in their home districts.
Allowing a vote was too scary for Mike Johnson because he couldn’t risk passage he pulled the rug out from under his own conferenceand in the process delivered a message to the American people.
Speaker Johnson told reporters:
There are about a dozen members in the conference who are in these swing districts and are fighting hard to make sure they can lower costs for all their constituents. And many of them wanted to vote on this Covid-era Obamacare subsidy that the Democrats created.
We looked for a way to take the pressure relief valve into account, but that was not to be the case. We actually worked on it all weekend. And in the end there was no agreement – it wasn’t made.
…
I certainly appreciate the views and opinions of each member of this conference. But I will tell you, one thing they will all be united on is voting for this bill that we discussed this morning.
