Faced with criticism from all sides, the new Prime Minister of France, Sébastien Lecornu, took the country in a deep political crisis less than 24 hours after mentioning his government and after less than a month in office.
The French presidency said on Monday in a statement that president Emmanuel Macron has accepted his resignation. Lecornu had replaced his predecessor, François Bayrou, to be the fourth prime minister of France in just a year.
Lecornu, a loyal ally of Macron, said that the conditions were no longer met to remain in office after they had not built up a consensus.
“It would take little before it works,” Lecornu said in his dismissal state. “By being more selfless for many, by knowing how to show humility. People always have to place his country for someone’s party.”

The opponents of Macron immediately tried to take advantage of the shocking dismissal, whereby the extreme right-wing national rally called him to call or resign.
“This raises a question for the President of the Republic: can he continue to resist the dissolution of the legislative power? We have reached the end of the road,” said extreme right-wing leader Marine Le Pen. “There is no other solution. The only sensible way of acting in these circumstances is to return to the polls.”
On the far left France also asked UnboWed for Macron’s departure, while votes shouted left for the revival of a coalition consisting of left, socialists, greens and communists.

The main task of Lecornu would have been to pass on a budget because France is confronted with a huge debt crisis. At the end of the first quarter of 2025, the government debt of France was 3,346 trillion euros ($ 3.9 trillion), or 114% of GDP. Debt retention remains a large budget item, accounting for around 7% of government spending.
Other key positions remained largely unchanged in relation to the previous cabinet, whereby the conservative Bruno Retailleau remained as Minister of the Interior responsible for the police and internal security, Jean-Noël Barrot remained as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Gérald Daranin the Ministry of Justice.

French politics has been in disorder since Macron mentioned Snap elections that produced a deeply fragmented legislative power. Daisious and left -wing legislators have more than 320 seats in the national meeting, while the centrists and allied conservatives have 210.
Looking for a consensus at the National Assembly, Lecornu consulted with all political forces and trade unions before forming his cabinet. He also promised that he would not use special constitutional power that his predecessors had used to force budgets through the parliament without a vote and instead request a compromise with legislators from left and right.
