An Australian surfer died on Saturday after he was bitten by a “big shark” on Long Reef Beach in Sydney, the police said.
New South Wales Police Chief Inspector John Duncan identified the victim as a 57-year-old father and “experienced surfer” who lost various limbs, according to Sky News.
“There was a man shouting:” I don’t want to be bitten, I don’t want to be bitten, don’t bite me, “and I saw the dorsal fin of the shark, and it was huge,” a witness told Sky News Australia on the spot.
The police said that they were called to the beach around 10 a.m. on Saturday to respond to reports from a man who “had been critical injury.”

“He was picked up from the surf and brought to the coast; [he] Died on the spot: “said the New South Wales police in a statement.
“Officers affiliated with the Northern Beaches Police Area Command have closed the beach and will maintain contact with experts … to determine the kind of sharks,” the police added. “Two sections of a surfboard were found and taken for expert research.”
The last time a person was killed by a shark in Sydney was in February 2022, according to Sky News the first fatal shark attack of the city that goes back to 1963.
Duncan told reporters on Saturday that the incident was a ‘terrible tragedy’.

“The Lord had gone out this morning around 9.30 am with some of his friends, about five or six of his friends,” he said through Sky News. “He is an experienced surfer that we understand.”
“Unfortunately, it seems that a large one we believe as a shark has attacked him. And as a result he lost a number of limbs,” Duncan reportedly added. “His colleagues managed to return safely to the beach, and a short time later his body was found in the surf, and a few other people went outside and recovered.”
