The warship of USS New Orleans flew on Wednesday off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, leaving two sailors behind with minor injuries, said civil servants.
The fire aboard the amphibious transport dock of San Antonio-Class burned about 12 hours in the water in White Beach Naval Facility in Okinawa before the fire was declared, the 7th fleet of the American Navy said in a statement on Thursday morning.
The fire on the 684 feet long ship is being investigated.
Two sailors were treated for minor injuries, but no details were provided about the injuries immediately.

Sailors aboard the warship fought the fire with the help of the crew of the USS San Diego, another warship that was moored in the water in White Beach Naval Facility in Okinawa, as well as the Japanese coast guard and soldiers.

The navy said the crew will stay on board the ship. The USS New Orleans, which was commissioned in 2007, can have a maximum of 800 people.

The incident came five years after a fire broke out on board the USS Bonhomme Richard and burned in San Diego for five days in July 2020. A sailor was charged and later acquitted of it.

In that case, a Navy report concluded that there were major failures involved by commanders, crew members and others. The ship was left with extensive structural, electrical and mechanical damage and was later deleted.
