Secretary-General António Guterres of the United Nations offered rare praise for President Donald Trump on Tuesday, after the president had announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Guterres, a vocal critic of Trump, gave the positive explanation only a few days after condemning the American strikes in Iran.
“I welcome the announcement of President Trump of a cease -the fire between Israel and Iran. I urge the two countries to fully respect. The fighting must stop,” Guterres wrote. “The people of the two countries have already suffered too much. It is my genuine hope that this will stop -the fires can be replicated in the other conflicts in the region.”

On June 22, after the US had struck Iran’s nuclear facilities, Guterres said that the actions taken by the US were a dangerous turn in a region that cannot withstand another cycle of destruction. “A day before, the UN chef offered a similar conviction and said that he was” seriously alerted “by the strikes.
“There is a growing risk that this conflict could quickly get out of hand – with catastrophic consequences for citizens, the region and the world,” Guterres wrote.

Trump announced a ceasefire to just over 48 hours after the Guterres warning and put an end to what the president called the “12-day war”-probably a reference to Israel’s historic six-day war in 1967.
On Tuesday, Trump expressed frustration with both Israel and Iran while it was chattering -the fire about to falter. He told reporters that he was “not happy with Israel” after the country had taken what he saw as aggressive action just before it ceases -the fires in force. The president was also upset when Israel promised to take revenge after Iran reportedly stopped -the fire broke, something that Tehran denied.

Trump later announced that Israel would not attack Iran and that the planes of the country would ‘turn around and go home’. In a subsequent position, he confirmed his opposition against Iran who owns a nuclear weapon and promised that Tehran would never rebuild his facilities. The president also insisted that both parties wanted to end the war ‘equally’.
