Tragic, but no longer surprising: the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released a report this month showing that ultra-processed foods make up more than half of the calories that are consumed by most Americans.
This is really how “starving in the middle of the abundance” looks. Our farmers and farmers grow enough high quality food to feed the world. But instead of filling our records with real things, our country of 340 million less than the non-nutricential food and sugary drinks allowed to become the pillar of the American diet.
We are in a crisis and edited foods feeding it.

Americans are addicted to junk, and as a result we have seen our country overweight, out of shape and less healthy: four of the every 10 adults are obese and six out of 10 of us have at least one chronic illness. This not only damages our individual health and lifespan, but it also creates a nightmare that has our hospital systems and Medicare programs bankrupt.

Hamburgers and Pizza two of the top five Calorical contributors according to the multi-year study of staples of our culture. They are known and (absolutely) delicious. But as with each of these ultra-processed foods, over-consumption will only lead to problems.
American agriculture is the answer.
We have to go back to the basics: that starts with a balanced diet, mainly from proteins, fruit and vegetables. At its root, that is the type of food that keeps you healthy and feeds your body – plus, it helps a hard -working agricultural or ranching family. That is what we produce.
My state is the gold standard of agriculture. Go anywhere in the world, and people know that Nebraska-enhanced protein of a cow, pig or chicken-the best-tasting, most nutritious food is that you can buy. We are also top producers of corn, beans and other edible foods that can all be part of a healthy, balanced diet.
Because of who we are, we lead on these issues: in Nebraska we worked with secretary Brooke Rollins to become the first state in the nation that cuts soft drinks and energy drinks from the food vouchers funded by the taxpayer. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is about helping families in need of getting healthy food on their plates, not to subsidize the purchase of junk that makes our country unhealthy.

President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that the presidential fitness test would come back is great news for our children. It also indicates an important shift in the American psyche: we realize that we can no longer just make ends meet – we have to take this crisis seriously, take action and make a number of fundamental changes in the way we think and what we do with food and exercise.
This moment is a wake-up call, not at night solution. More Americans are becoming serious to become stronger, eat healthier and live more good.
By cutting junk food and grew up nutritious, high-quality proteins and healthy products through our hard-working farmers and farmers, we can take major steps to solve these problems.
