Donald Trump really needed to use the first State Of The Union speech of his second term to do a hard reset. Trump just reached his 36% approval rating.
It doesn’t really matter what Trump had to say about anything else. It is the economy that is destroying his presidency.
Earlier on Tuesday, Republicans desperately hoped that Trump would get the message and speak to the American people about affordability, but since this president thinks the economic struggles of non-rich people are a hoax, that’s exactly what didn’t happen.
Americans needed to hear that Trump gets it.
Instead, Donald J. Trump sent the opposite message:
Today our border is secure. Our minds are restored, inflation is falling, incomes are rising rapidly. The booming economy is roaring like never before.
And our enemies are afraid. Our military and police are aligned, and America is respected again, perhaps like never before.
After four years. In which millions and millions of illegal aliens flooded our borders completely unchecked and unchecked. We now have by far the strongest and most secure border in American history.

This was NOT the message Republicans needed from Trump.
In fact it was a disaster.
Instead of empathizing with economically struggling Americans, Trump mocked them.
The President said:
Now the same people in this room who voted for these disasters suddenly used the word affordability, a word. They just used it. Someone gave it to them knowing full well that they were causing and creating the higher prices that all our citizens were experiencing. You caused that problem. You caused that problem.
They knew their statements were a lie. They knew. They knew their statements were a dirty lie. Their policies created the high prices. Our policy will quickly put an end to this. We are doing very well. Those prices are falling.
The price of eggs has fallen by 60%. Madam Secretary, thank you. The cost of chicken, butter, fruit, hotels, cars. The rent today is less than one. I have come into power by a wide margin, and even beef, which was very high, is beginning to drop significantly. Wait a minute. We’ll take it down.

Trump did not empathize with people who have difficulty paying for food. He humiliated, blamed and made excuses. This is Trump’s economy and Trump’s problem. The American people don’t believe in it, and Trump showed how completely out of touch he is.
