Donald Trump’s meeting with newly elected New York Mayor Mamdani would create a strange image for the American people.
The image broadcast to the world was even more bizarre, as the frail and decaying Trump sat behind his desk in the Oval Office, with Mamdani towering over him, like the future hovering over the waning and soon-to-be-forgotten past.
Republicans desperately needed something to get their base invested in the 2026 elections. The motivations Republicans use to get their voters to the polls are generally not hopeful or inspiring. Republicans love to scare their voters at the ballot box, traditionally with ideological or cultural monsters.
Democrats are trying to be inspired to cast their vote. Republicans must be terrified that their world will end if the Republican Party doesn’t win the next election.
It hasn’t helped the Republican Party that Trump essentially campaigned on the message that if Republicans voted for him, they would never have to vote again. Based on the outcome of the 2025 election, Republican voters took Trump’s word for it because they were defeated from coast to coast.
The meeting between Mamdani and Trump at the White House was the kind of staged visual that cable news loves.
Since Trump’s decline became apparent, the White House’s ability to effectively orchestrate events has gone downhill, but what happened at the Mamdani has devastated the Republican Party’s plans for 2026.
Keep reading to see the disaster Trump has created.
