It was an unusual request, but a good one. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman asked Trump to intervene in the ongoing civil war in Sudan during his meeting with President Donald Trump on November 18. A war that has created the largest current humanitarian crisis on Earth. As many as 400,000 people have already died from war, disease and famine. An estimated 13 million people have been displaced.
Trump has previously refrained from getting involved. It’s another difficult one, which has a lot of history. Ethnic conflict, power struggles between military factions, swirling Islamic and jihadist ideologies, international players on different sides and seemingly not much upside for the US. But that’s where the superficial analysis is wrong.
Trump must use his position and unparalleled skills in resolving global conflicts to put an end to this horrific disaster. And he should do it for us, the Americans.
We are at our best when we use our power selflessly. Our status is rising and atmospheric support for continued American global leadership is increasing. This is a key moment for us as our leadership is directly challenged by the Chinese Communist Party.

Add to that the trillion other reasons the Crown Prince gave the President.
That’s his promise to invest $1 trillion in the United States. That’s not a big change, but it won’t happen automatically. Important negotiations between leaders take place on a relational basis. There must be mutual trust. This isn’t about dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s in a contract. This is about fulfilling and getting what you believe in in your heart, what you agreed to. There is an expectation game that must be matched or exceeded in order for the relationship to continue. Each leader must believe that the other is fully committed to achieving what has been agreed upon in his heart, not the details in signed agreements.
The recent meeting between the Crown Prince and the President will be the most important between our two countries in decades as the leaders work seriously in the coming months and years to exceed the other’s expectations.
In that way, Sudan is a test. Will Trump really work and invest his authority and reputation to bring this humanitarian disaster to an end? It is worth more than a trillion dollars to the American economy.

And there is an even bigger problem: China is supporting Saudi Arabia.
The Saudis, with their resources and unparalleled status as defenders of Mecca and Medina, the two holiest places for all Muslims, are the de facto leaders of the 56 Muslim-majority countries. We want the Saudis to be our most important ally, not China’s, otherwise more countries could fall under China’s influence.

China is strategically pursuing Saudi Arabia in its bid to become the world’s leader and undermine the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency. This status has enormous benefits for our economy, a fact that the Chinese are well aware of. The Chinese want to dethrone the dollar, and a key part of that strategy is to get the Saudis and other Gulf countries to trade in Chinese currencies, not dollars. We cannot afford to let this happen.
Millions of lives are at stake in Sudan, but so is US global leadership and the supremacy of the dollar. President Trump must use his peerless skills and position as a peacemaker to save lives and advance our interests.
