On Friday, August 8, President Donald Trump ordered the US Army to take action against Mexican and other Latin -American drug cartels, and took an expected step after explaining these violent groups such as foreign terrorist organizations less than a month in his second term.
Sending the army to our southern border, and possibly beyond, is a much needed step for national security. Because the problem is worse than most Americans realize. Proof shows that corrupt Mexican military and law enforcement officials help the cartels on American soil.
Trump has succeeded in securing the border where former president Joe Biden Failed – unless failure was the goal.

But securing the border is about more than the positions of illegal access to America – it also includes banning fatal drugs and preventing or catching criminals, terrorists and hostile agents to come in.

From May to July, the US Department of Interior Security (DHS) did not release any illegal immigrants from the border to the interior of the nation. In 2024, during the same three -month period, Biden released 212,000 illegal aliens in the interior with a simple promise to report to an immigration judge at some point. Most of them take the trouble to report and just disappeared.
Border protection is not only an immigration problem – it is necessary for national security. Six years ago, the Texas Public Policy Foundation submitted a Freedom of Information ACT request from DHS for reports from Mexican military or law enforcement that operate on American soil or in American airspace. The DHS responded in July 2025, after the Biden administration had suppressed the response for years.
Carteldrones form ‘dangerous’ drug trafficking risk in the border state, official warnings
We have carefully assessed 190 pages with serious incident reports that detailed Mexican raids in America during the six-year period from 2014 to 2019, which cover the last three years of the Obama government and the first three years of the first Trump government.
The reports detailed 78 separate incidents, of which 39 seemed considerable and 39 benign. The latter included the police in hot pursuit of suspects, or training aircraft that take off from airports near the border and briefly stray in the American airspace. The remaining 39 reports indicated something disturbing: Mexican authorities who deliberately violate the American territory, probably in corrupt service of the Mexican drug and human handlines.
Of particular importance, of the 39 incidents confirmed on American territory, only four happened during the night. That only one in 10 incidents happened during the coverage of darkness seemed strange. Of this, Ammon Blair, a colleague and former Border Patrol agent, told me that “the cartels owned the night”, he noticed that night was “gutaway central”, referring to those who saw the border patrol or had evidence, but not to arrest.
This means that there may have been hundreds of cases in which the Mexican army or law enforcement crossed the border under cover of darkness to help the cartels, but that the lack of a positive ID was DHS to register the invasion as by the Mexican government personnel. Furthermore, the engagement rules of Border Patrol are very risk -weawers. If it is determined that a heavily armed force works in the area, border patrouille teams – often only two agents – are ordered to withdraw.

Blair told me about an incident in which he and his partner, armed with pistols, were urgently ordered back to their vehicles. They were told that national intelligence methods had picked up radio traffic that indicated that a Mexican army team, “you have in their sights.” Ten with guns against two with side arm are not good opportunities.
But that was then. Today, after important investments initiated during the first Trump administration and stimulated under one big great account, both customs and border protection in our access gates and border patrol on points in between have better technology. Autonomous monitoring towers with Night Thermal Technology and Aerostat Surveillance balloons offer much better nocturnal coverage than six years ago.
Border protection is not only an immigration problem – it is necessary for national security.
That said, not every owner of real estate along the border will allow a tower full of sensors on their property, so that dead spaces in ravines and low spots will remain uncovered. About a third of the cameras are broken at any time. And there are still only about two border patrol agents who cover every mile of the southern border.

Unfortunately, the enemy gets a voice at war. In 190 pages with reports in six years, only one mentions of a quadcopter had flown by the Mexican police on American soil. Last year DHS reported that 60,000 drones were observed within a few hundred meters from the border – that is 330 a day. Whether it concerns the cartels or Mexican officials, these drones serve two main goals: counterclaim – find out where border patrol, law enforcement or soldiers are; And denial of the area – Border Patrol will not fly his helicopters in areas where drones work.

Even today we still do not know the reason for the crash of a national security helicopter with the loss of three on board in March 2024 near Rio Grande City, Texas, on the border.
And now there are reports that not only have Mexican cartels sent people to fight in Ukraine to learn drone tactics, but they have also checked drones with fiber optics in Mexico. These drones are resistant to Jammen.

Secondly, for the threat of China, the rise of the Mexican Narco-State on our southern border is a serious national security challenge, one that DHS cannot only handle the staff, the equipment, the training and the doctrine to do this.
Instead, only targeted military operations can prohibit armed raids in America – something the US Army was built to do. The application of the lessons of earlier conflicts, the use of the army on an ambush and conquering armed border infiltrators will increase the costs of violating American sovereignty while a powerful message is sent to Mexico City.
