“The United States needs Greenland for national security. It is vital to the Golden Dome we are building,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday.
Trump is right. Grab a globe and look down from the North Pole, or check out this official map from the Pentagon. You will see that Greenland is crucial to the Arctic front. The east coast of Greenland is guarded by the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom or GIUK. This is the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear-armed submarines. Greenland is home to important early warning radar sites because its field of view covers much of the flight paths of bombers and missiles from Russia and China. No Greenland, no Golden Dome missile shield.
That is why Trump has lit a bonfire among Denmark and NATO to spur much-needed progress against aggressive actions by Russia and China.
Trump has an eye for prime real estate. And the quickest and easiest solution would be for the US to take over. There is a good business case for buying Greenland. Especially when you throw in critical mineral mining. And Trump has run the numbers. In 2019, he estimated Greenland’s transportation costs at about $770 million per year.
SAVING LAWGISLATIVES PROPOSED A LAW TO BLOCK MILITARY ACTION AGAINST NATO MEMBERS AGAINST THREAT TO TAKE GREENLAND
No, there probably won’t be an invasion. The only sure way Greenland can lose its own sovereignty is by getting too close to China. According to The Wall Street Journal, Greenland’s prime minister flew to Beijing in 2017 and asked China to finance new airports. Denmark stopped the deal. If something like this happens again, Greenland will fly the American flag.
Officially, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte does not intend to come between Trump and Greenland. “I never comment when there are discussions within the Alliance,” Rutte said after a speech on January 13 to Danish businessman and member of the European Parliament Christine Bosse.
Behind the scenes, NATO and Denmark will take action. Rutte understands the importance of the High North and that also applies to the NATO soldiers. On January 13, Rutte praised Denmark’s investments in icebreakers, Boeing P-8 surveillance aircraft for anti-submarine warfare and improved missile defense.
TRUMP SAYS US IS MAKING MOVES TO ACQUIRE GREENLAND ‘WHETHER LIKE IT OR NOT’
So for Trump, Greenland will probably be a bit like that house in your neighborhood that you covet but can’t actually buy. But he will keep the pressure on. This is why.
Protect America
Greenland is the center of U.S. defense against Russian or Chinese nuclear missile attacks. At Pituffik Space Base they have an airstrip, a seaport and lots of radar and giant satellite dishes. U.S. Space Force Guardians operate the early warning radar system to spot intercontinental ballistic missile threats and sea-launched missiles coming from Russia, China or anywhere else. The squadrons also provide tracking, command and control for American satellites and all other objects in space, such as the 1,300 Chinese satellites. America would be blind without this oversight.
EUROPEAN ALLIES WORKING ON PLAN AS US ACTIONS ACQUISITION OF GREENLAND: REPORT
Chinese wild card
China sent three icebreakers to the Arctic in 2024 and last summer a “research submarine” ventured under the Arctic ice sheet. In 2025, China sent a container ship from China to Britain for the first time via the ‘Polar Silk Road’. The design for China’s latest Type 096 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine appears to feature a stronger hull to operate amid ice. Deploy Chinese submarines in the Arctic and US military bases, data centers and more are suddenly within range. The US will do whatever it takes to stop that threat.

Denmark is a capable ally
Denmark comes along when it matters. Denmark sent planes and special forces to Afghanistan and their soldiers fought in Helmand province. The Danish Air Force already flies American F-35 stealth fighters and placed an order for 16 more in October. Speaking of space, the Danes have boldly entered the regulatory mess that is the European Union’s new Space Act, offering a more balanced plan to treat U.S. commercial space companies fairly as they build constellations in low Earth orbit. Keep in mind that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen faces a tough election in October, so resolving a Greenland row could be a feather in the cap.

NATO will go one step further
NATO does not disagree on this. The situation in the world is too dangerous. Putin launched another nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile at Ukraine on January 10. Moreover, NATO partners are well aware of the problem in the Far North. “Britain is stepping up security in the Arctic,” British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said in a Jan. 14 press release. Britain has been training with Norwegian commandos for decades and will complete Operation Tarrassis in October, training with nine other NATO countries in the Baltic Sea and the Arctic. As Cooper said, “By coming together as an alliance, we can unite and tackle this emerging threat.”
