While railing against House Republicans at the now empty Kennedy Center For over an hour, Trump said, “I’m not going to say cancel the election, they should cancel the election because the fake news will say ‘he wants the election canceled. He’s a dictator.’ They always call me a dictator,”
Trump says these things because the left is getting a rise, and it scares them because some people will think, because there is always some clickbait website that will run Trump’s threat to stoke fear and clicks, that he might actually cancel the election.
Spoiler warning: Elections are organized and administered at the state and local level. The federal government has no power or authority over elections. The federal government has no mechanism to stop elections.
When Trump attempted to change the administration of elections through an executive order, that executive order was invalidated by the courts. States don’t have to listen to what Trump says about elections, and they won’t.
Trump later showed his hand in the same ramble when he implored Republicans to keep the House of Representatives.
The president said, “You have to win the midterm elections. Because if we don’t win the midterm elections, they will find a reason to impeach me. I will be impeached.”
Democrats have shown that they are much more interested in impeaching members of Trump’s administration at this point, because Democrats already know they won’t have the votes to convict and remove Trump from office in a Senate trial, but they could use impeachment to oust some of the worst people from the Trump administration.
Trump should be taken seriously, even if he cannot stop the midterm elections.
