When Donald Trump gets into political trouble, such as after his party is defeated in coast-to-coast elections, one of his favorite tricks is to promise money to the American people.
Trump spent the weekend in Florida at his golf club, and while doing nothing to resolve the government shutdown, Trump has been posting relentlessly on his social media account about his tariffs, which could potentially be struck down by the Supreme Court.
The president’s tariffs are deeply unpopular, so he recently attempted to bribe the American people with the promise of a $2,000 tariff dividend.
Trump posted:
People who are against tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the richest, most respected country in the world, with virtually no inflation and a record stock market. 401k’s are the highest EVER. We are receiving trillions of dollars and will soon begin paying off our HUGE DEBT, $37 trillion. Record investments in the US, factories and factories are being built everywhere. A dividend of at least $2,000 per person (not including high-income earners!) will be paid to everyone.
Tariffs are taxes on the American people, so what Trump is promising is to give the American people a small portion of their own money back.
The tariffs are paid by the American people, so Trump’s plan is like someone stealing your wallet to pay you back the $20 they owe you.
The other problem with the plan is that his own government has shot it down and made it clear that no money is going to the American people.
When Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was asked about the dividend plan, it became embarrassing for Trump.
