Donald Trump lost a major Supreme Court case because the court majority ruled that a president does not have unlimited power, and threw out his ability to impose reciprocal tariffs based on his whims.
Watch me discuss Trump’s loss of power in the video below:
During his response to the press conference on Friday, Trump suggested he has other tools to impose tariffs, saying the Supreme Court gave him the power to destroy economies, which isn’t true, but the president is angry and he’s desperate to prove he still has power, so Trump announced a new 10% global tariff on Friday. The legal authority Trump used is limited and any new tariffs are set to expire in August.
Trump’s need to look strong, combined with his ignorance of tariffs, led him to post on Truth Social on Saturday:
Based on a thorough, detailed and complete review of the ridiculous, poorly written and extremely anti-American decision on tariffs issued yesterday, after MANY months of contemplation, by the Supreme Court of the United States, let this statement serve to indicate that I, as President of the United States of America, will immediately increase the 10% global tariff on countries, many of which have ‘ripped off’ the US for decades, without retaliation (until I came along!), to the full extent permissible, and legally tested, 15% level. Over the next few short months, the Trump Administration will enact and enact the new and legally authorized tariffs that will continue our extremely successful process of Making America Great Again – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!
The problem is that Trump has responded to losing the tariff case by raising prices for the American people.
Trump is more interested in a strong image than actual policy, and as we will see below, he is wrong on both counts.
