President Donald Trump has just taken a crucial step to make health care affordable again.
On September 4, his administration announced that most Americans are now eligible to buy what is known as “copper plans” on the Obamacare exchanges. Before this reform, almost all Americans were legally excluded from buying these much more affordable plans. But now working families can get the plans they need for a price that they can afford – and many uninsured people will probably be covered by that.
The president is one of the fundamental problems with Obamacare solved. That law forced Americans who get their insurance on the individual market to buy valuable plans, and in the 11 years since the law came into effect, they have become even more expensive.

Obamacare plans have risen by almost 200% since 2013. What is more, the prices for all plans are expected to increase another 18% by the beginning of next year.
Trump’s health care order will help to resolve health care for everyone
The Obamacare authors knew that their law would make health care more expensive. That is why they have quietly created an actual affordable option, which they called ‘copper plans’. These plans cover existing circumstances, essential health benefits and everything else that Obamacare requires, but they have slightly higher out-of-pocket costs in exchange for dramatically lower premiums.
Dozens of millions of people could benefit from these options, but the federal government allowed only a miniscule number of Americans to buy them. In short, you had to be younger than 30. While someone else could request an “hardship exemption” to be eligible, the federal government rarely or never made these requests, forcing people to pay much more.
Not anymore. The Trump government has effectively said that most Americans are now eligible for hardships, which means that everyone can buy a copper plan. Research from my organization shows that copper plans have an average of 22% lower premiums than the typical bronze plan – and they cost up to 60% less than the Obamacare gold plans. By choosing these options, families can literally save hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year.

The return of affordability is reason enough to praise the president’s movement. But this reform will have the extra advantage to enable uninsured people to finally get coverage they can afford. Almost 27 million Americans are uninsured, many – if not most – because a health insurance policy costs too much. They need access to copper plans, but their own government has blocked them. Now they are free to buy better coverage.
It is crucial that the uninsured population has the exact groups of people who can help the Obamacare exchanges to become more sustainable. The second and third largest groups of the uninsured are between the age of 26 and 34 and 35 and 44 respectively. These are usually healthier people who do not need valuable plans because they do not need much health care. As such, they don’t mind that the higher out-of-pocket costs that are accompanied by the typical copper plan.
By helping to cover more of these people, President Trump can very well stop the Doom loop that Obamacare has defined-a doomlus of increasingly higher prices that are driving more and more people out of the markets. And with less uninsured Americans and more people with private coverage, hospitals will see their non -compensated healthcare costs fall. Hospitals – especially rural hospitals – will therefore have a stronger foot.

This mere reform can help millions – if not tens of millions – get more affordable coverage. It also fits well with another common sense policy issued by President Trump. He has reversed the limitations of the Biden administration on short-term plans, so that Americans can buy even more affordable coverage options for years.
This reform will also expand the coverage to more uninsured, while others can get plans that better match their budgets. We are talking about Americans of all ages between jobs and are looking for work, those who are retired, but who are not yet eligible for Medicare and working families who are desperately looking for affordable coverage.
Americans urgently need this healthcare lighting. While Democrats and the media demand that Republicans only expand Obamacare subsidies to prevent people from losing cover, that is not a real or sustainable solution.

More government subsidies make health insurance only more expensive, no less. President Trump has taken the better path by giving Americans more access to more affordable plans.
When it comes to helping families, the brief reform of the president will make a long -term difference and his reform of the copper plans will get a golden star.
