A high-speed train rammed into a herd of elephants in northeastern India early Saturday morning, killing seven elephants and injuring a calf.
The Rajdhani Express, carrying around 650 passengers, was traveling through Assam when the driver spotted around 100 wild Asian elephants crossing the tracks and applied the emergency brakes.
Despite the effort, the train collided with several of the endangered animals, according to the Associated Press reported.

The impact derailed the engine and five carriages.
None of the passengers on the train, which was traveling from Sairang in Mizoram state to New Delhi, were injured in the incident, the AP reported.
“We have disconnected the carriages that were not derailed and the train has resumed its journey to New Delhi,” Indian Railways spokesman Kapinjal Kishore Sharma told the AP. “Around 200 passengers who were in the five derailed coaches have been shifted to Guwahati in another train.”

Veterinarians later performed autopsies on the elephants.
According to the AP, they would be buried later in the day on Saturday.

Assam is home to an estimated 7,000 wild Asian elephants, and train-related deaths are an ongoing problem.

At least a dozen elephants have been killed on railway lines in the state since 2020, AP reported.
Asian elephants are considered endangered, with only an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 left in the wild, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
