The Points Guy founder Brian Kelly discusses how the bankruptcy of Spirit Airlines can influence travel.
After submitting bankruptcy less than a year ago, Spirit Airlines goes through the same process again after a failed reorganization of the wrestling discount airline, the company said Friday.
The airline President and CEO, Dave Davis, wrote in an open letter to customers that the chapter 11 restructuring process “would ensure that the success in the long term could remain of our company, so that we can continue to serve our guests well into the future.”
Spirit added that “almost every large airline used these tools to improve their companies and position them for long -term success.”
The airline presented bankruptcy for the first time in November after two failed mergers in the past two years with Frontier and Jetblue.

Spirit, an ultra-low-cost airline, has difficulty compete with other large airlines that offer different service levels and fly to more destinations.
The airline assured customers that it would continue to work normally during the bankruptcy process, and passengers could use tickets, credits and loyalty points on flights.

Spirit Airlines warns that it may not survive another year
The no-frills airline has tried to rebrand itself as more premium because customer preferences have shifted the low costs, but it has struggled with cuts on the budget and created less requirement by uncertainty in the economy.

“Since it comes from our earlier restructuring, which was exclusively aimed at reducing the funded debts of Spirit and increasing share capital, it has become clear that there is much more work to be done, and there are many more tools available to position the best spirit for the future,” Davis said earlier this month.

The carrier said in a Securities and Exchange Commission that IT submits, is still influenced by “unfavorable market conditions”, including the constant weak demand for domestic travel trips in the second quarter of 2025. The persistent challenges created a “challenging price environment,” said the airline.
