The Slovenian legislators became the first Eastern European country to legalized a law on Friday to allow medically supported suicide for terminally illual adults, in a shift in the regional end of the lifespan.
The legislators of the country approved the bill after a closely monitored parliamentary vote with 50 votes for, 34 against and three remember. The vote also focused on a national referendum that requires an extensive rule of law on the end of life.
After a consultative referendum last year, the legislation in which 55% of voters supported the right to autonomy at the end of the lifespan. Although the move is praised as historical, the implementation of the law will not be immediately because the procedures and supervisory mechanisms are still being developed.
The law applies to terminally ill adults who experience unbearable suffering without prospect of improvement. To make candidates qualified, they must be mentally competent and have already exhausted their available treatment options. Persons who suffer exclusively from mental disorders will be excluded from suitability. The patient must offer informed, voluntary and repeated permission. It is believed that the process may require evaluation by several medical professionals.

Although it is praised as a milestone movement, it will not be implemented immediately because the detailed procedures and supervisory mechanisms are still being completed.
“This is a victory for compassion and dignity,” said a legislator in support of the bill. A civil rights group opposed the referendum of the law to destroy the measure.
A civil rights group that opposes the new law has promised on Friday to request public support for a possible attempt to force a referendum on the measure.
