Controversy surrounded the 2023 Ryder Cup When Patrick Cantlay’s wardrobe led a conversation about paying players at the tournament.
Cantlay chose not to wear a hat While playing on Saturdayclaiming that it didn’t suit him. However, it arose that it was a protest because he was not paid to play. Xander Schauffele was reportedly not happy that he essentially played for free, and reportedly it came to the point that he was almost kicked off the team.
In the midst of that speculation, European fans Cantlay resolved that day through his round by waving their hat to him. After making a long Birdie -Putt, however, members of Team USA De Gunst returned, just like his Caddy, Joe Lacava.

Lacava waved his hat right in front of Rory McIlroy, who still had to draw, and it turned into a heated conversation on both the green and the parking lot.
Players at the Ryder Cup had received a certain amount, reportedly between $ 200,000 and $ 300,000, to donate to a charity. After the controversy of the Cantlay, however, American golfers will now receive $ 300,000 for a charity plus another $ 200,000 stipendium of the PGA from America.
European players receive no extra money.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler hinted that the extra money will also go to local charities in his hometown Dallas. Ironically, Cantlay himself offered similar comments on Tuesday, just like Collin Morikawa on Wednesday.

However, when the conversations about Americans were still in the rumor stage, Rory McIlroy did not seem excited.
“I would personally pay the privilege to play on the Ryder Cup,” he said last year. Ironically, McIlroy has not worn a hat at various team events, including the Ryder Cups 2016 and 2018 and 2021 Olympic Games.
Team Europe Captain Luke Donald added: “It’s a week in which you play for more than yourself. It’s not about money or points, it’s about getting together when a team and the fans feed that – it’s all passion. I don’t think we’ll ever be paid.”
However, Morikawa made it clear on Wednesday that the added wage would be the last where he would be at his head on Friday morning.
“Look, I think all 12 of us play here at the end of the day when we play it on Friday, and before this all started, we just want to win the Ryder Cup,” he said. “We want to win it for ourselves. We want to win it for our country. When we were there two days ago and we had speeches from the Nassau Players Club, and we have speeches from the [NYFD] Firefighter and his son, look, I am not an emotional man, but there were emotions. And sometimes it just gets home. When you hear things like that, and you can put that emotion forward, just represent a country, you want to step on that first T -shirt and put points on the board. That is all I will remember. “

PGA from America CEO Kerry Haigh said it was “time” to pay players, given the amount of income that the Ryder Cup has brought in over the years. However, the organization said that “No players asked to be compensated.”
Nevertheless, however, it should be obvious that Team Europe this weekend in a hostile New York environment at Bethpage Black will use it as a motivation to become the first team that a Ryder Cup won on the road since they did in 2012.
