The White House thinks that the current debate about the financing of the government can be won, just as the last was in March. They believe that nothing has changed and they can approve a bill to keep the government open by putting the Senate Democrats against a deadline without negotiations.
The political climate has changed.
The White House does not see it, that is why Trump and his party are about to step on the rake and hit himself in the face with a government closure.
The Republican leadership of the house intends to put a bill on the ground this week to keep the federal government open until November 20, a strategy aimed at giving buyers to give seven weeks to give a broader expenditure deal for the FY2026 accounts.
Republicans say that the CR “clean” will be – free from partisan policy riders.
But as we have reported, the GOP proposal does not include the demands of the Democrats. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and Huismertheid leader Hakeem Jeffries have said that they cannot vote for CR, unless it includes provisions related provisions.
It is not clear whether Democrats demand that Republicans improved premium subsidies for Obamacare renew or repair OBBB Medicaid cuts. Instead, Schumer and Jeffries simply called on Republicans to negotiate.
People who think that Democrats have to announce that they are closing the government miss the political nuance.
By asking for negotiations, Democrats are reasonable and they make every Gop attempt to blame them for a closure by showing that it is Trump and his party who do not want to talk.
When/when the government is closed, they are republicans who hold the bag because they are in power, and they refused to come to the table to secure the required voices to prevent a closure.
The economy is already in poor condition and will be damaged even more by a government closure. There are no winners in the closure itself, but if the government is closed, it will not reopen it without republicans at least recovering Obamacare subsidies, something that Republicans can now participate.
Democrats have no control over the congress or the White House, so they will not take the blame for a closure.
Trump has the record for the longest closure of the government in history. The government was closed for 35 days in 2019 because he wanted financing for its border wall.
If the government is closed again, it can take even longer.
