Iryna Zarutska fled Ukraine torn by war that sought safety, but America failed her.
Zarutska, a 23-year-old daughter and sister, escaped the horrors of war and was looking for a new beginning in the United States. Instead, she was brutally stabbed to death while driving on a Charlotte -Lighttril. In a horrible attack caught on the camera, her throat was cut by a violent repeated perpetrator with 14 earlier arrests. That raises the question: why was a violent criminal with 14 arrests free to roam through our streets? Unfortunately, such chaos is a common appearance in a city run by the Democrat.
This was not a random action. It was a tragedy to prevent, a failure of our system to protect the vulnerable. America failed Zarutska, and we must ensure that it does not fail others like she.

As a representative of North Carolina, I am deeply sad and furious about what happened so close to home. This incident reflects a broader crisis that unfolds in our nation, where soft-on-criminals enable dangerous criminals to avoid accountability. Charlotte Mayor VI Lyles has claimed: “We will never arrest our way from problems such as homelessness and mental health.” I don’t agree with that.
Although tackling random causes is important, we cannot ignore the immediate necessity of protecting our communities by ensuring that repeated perpetrators have consequences. Loving our neighbors means protecting them against people who have no things to walk to our streets.
America has failed Zarutska and we must ensure that it does not fail, others like them.
The tackling of the links to prioritize clementia for perpetrators above justice for victims, has too much, such as Iryna, vulnerable. In cities led by Democrat, from Charlotte to Chicago, we see a disturbing pattern of trivializing lawlessness while we overlook the pain of those who suffer.
81% of Americans see crime as a ‘big problem’ in large cities, new poll
Media sometimes reinforce this story and portray criminals as victims of circumstances while ignoring the real victims – torn families torn, communities that live and live in fear as Iryna’s extracts.
This approach has devastating consequences. Zarutska earned better. America deserves better.
The violence in Charlotte is a microcosm of a national epidemic. During Labor Day Weekend in Chicago, at least eight people were killed and 58 others were injured in shootings in the city. JB Pritzker government claims that crime is under control, but the figures tell a different story.

Throughout the country, cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia report similar challenges, in which 81% of Americans mention a major problem in recent polls as a major problem. The public demands action – and they are right to do this.

President Donald Trump has shown that a tough approach works. Since August 2025, the action of the Trump government in Washington – has reinforced federal law enforcement and support from the National Guard – led to more than 1,900 arrests and the seizure of more than 200 illegal firearms in the capital. A 12 -day stretch without murder meant a sharp break of the historic average of DC every other day.
This common enforcement shows that decisive action can offer real progress. Even Democratic mayor Muriel Bowser could not argue with the figures.

Unfortunately, the policy of the Democrat too often protects illegal alien beings, criminals, terrorists and gang members, which exposed American communities to violence. Republicans give priority to the safety of authority -abiding citizens above the feelings of criminals.
To tackle this crisis, we need a balanced approach: immediate, robust law enforcement to remove dangerous offenders from our streets and long -term investments to tackle the root causes of crime. It also means that bail systems are reformed to ensure that violent repeated perpetrators are not easily released to harm innocent people such as Zarutska.

The death of Zarutska is a call for action. America must be a place of safety and peace.
With my democratic colleagues, I insist on joining Republicans in first and foremost of victims, supporting law enforcement and investing in our communities. Together we can honor the memory of Iryna Zarutska by building a safer, stronger America-one where no 23-year-old woman fears being stabbed by a repeated perpetrator who just seemed to be a strange one behind her in a train.
