On the face of it, Rep. Al Green’s attempt to impeach Donald Trump failed today in the House of Representatives by a vote of 237-140-47. The motion to impeach Trump has been filed, but if you look under the hood, you will make progress toward impeaching Trump.
The voters present were almost all Democrats in the leadership of the House of Representatives, and one of the Democrats who voted no had a very good reason for that.
House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) explained the plan for Green’s Trump impeachment articles:
Congressman Green has introduced an impeachment resolution targeting two of President Trump’s egregious recent attacks on the Constitution, citing a small portion of the vast and growing inventory of such violations committed by President Trump and members of his Cabinet, including Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Secretary Kristi Noem.
Impeachment is a crucial and essential tool of political and constitutional self-defense that the Framers have given to the people to be used when a lawless president or other high official commits dangerously high crimes and misdemeanors against the people.
We are in a period where multiple members of the Trump administration are engaged in lawless actions that may constitute high crimes and misdemeanors. Members outraged by these transgressions have begun filing impeachment resolutions on certain actions and events that upset them most. There is certainly no shortage of such crimes against the Constitution and the people taking place.
In light of the lawlessness of the government, it is best at this time not to vote for the filing of this impeachment resolution, but to submit it to the Judiciary Committee.
Al Green’s effort to impeach Trump is being integrated into the broader Democratic base for future impeachments if Democrats win back the House of Representatives.
